Since
Dispur had started awarding computers to those passing the
first divisioners and a rise in over all pass percentage in
these examinations, he said. The HSLC pass percentage has
seen a steady rise by 8.48 between 2005 (53.07 per cent) and
2009 (61.55 per cent). The pass percentage in 2006 was 53.54.
In subsequent, the pass percentage was 54.93 and 58.68. Addressing
a packed gathering, Gogoi said the award of desktop computers
had introduced an element of competitiveness among the students
and the laptops would provide further encouragement. The new
gadget would be even more helpful given its portable nature,
he said. This year 17,362 students passed in the first division
against 12,756 in 2005 when the award was first instituted
and the desktop computers were gifted.
Gogoi
exhorted the student community to aim higher and use the gadgets
to do well in higher secondary and competitive examinations
for getting admission to IITs and IIMs, saying he would like
to see more Anundoram Borooah emerge from the student-friendly
initiative and bring laurels to the state. Health and IT minister
Himanta Biswa Sarma said the computers given to successful
students should make them proud. He said the move had been
praised by other states who now want to launch similar scheme.
"But they have not been able to because of funds constraints.
We aree a poor state and yet we have been able to do it,"
he said, adding that the government was laying a lot of emphasis
on education and IT sector. Education minister Gautam Bora,
social welfare minister Akon Bora, chief secretary P. C. Sharma,
the managing director of Assam Electronics Development Corporation
Ltd, M. K. Yadava, were also present.
