GUWAHATI, Feb 10: Filmmaker par excellence,
Jahnu Barua's film Firingoti will be screened
tomorrow at Rabindra Bhavan at the ongoing 4th
Cine ASA Guwahati International Film Festival,
organized by the Cine Art Society, Assam, in
association with the Assam State Film (Finance
and Development) Corporation. This will be an
attempt on the part of the organizers to honour
this filmmaker who has put Assam on the global
cinema map with his path-breaking and critically
acclaimed films and completed 30 years in filmmaking.
The organizers will also felicitate the artistes
who were part of Firingoti. They include lead
actress Moloya Goswami, who later went on to
win the National Film Award for Best Actress
for this film, Chetana Das, Ranjit Das and Bhargab
Katoki.
As part of this international film fest, a
discussion was also held today at Rabindra Bhavan
on the topic 'Regional Films, Avenues of funding
and Scope of Promotion in International Market'.
Gautam Bora, Ahsan Mazid, Mridul Gupta and Moily
Senapati took part in the discussion.
Gautam Bora said, "The production houses
in Assam are not financially sound and nor are
they professional. Another reason why Assamese
films do not run is the fact that after the
Assam Movement, the concept of the greater Assamese
society has started to dwindle. Now indigenous
tribes and communities prefer to watch films
made in their own languages instead of films
in the Assamese language. Also, the Assamese
film industry has many technical shortcomings
in areas like sound, lighting and script-writing.
The film industry needs to upgrade itself. There
is also no experimentation in Assamese films."
