Shambhu Boro, NAPAM (TEZPUR), Feb 10 - Urging
the new generation to get involved in nation
building, Union Minister for Human Resources
Development, Kapil Sibal today said that India
is able to cope with the economic, political
and social challenges of the present scenario
in the world. The Union Minister was addressing
a mammoth gathering as a chief guest of the
10th convocation of Tezpur University here some
20 km away from the Tezpur town of Sonitpur
district.
He observed that the students of Assam, where
a great saint and social scientist like Sankardeva
was born, undoubtedly have got talent to cope
with every field, including economics and science
and technology.
"We have to facilitate exchange between
our talents and the outside world for a better
life reflecting an overall development of the
society," Sibal said, adding that along
with the development of our education system
"we have to stress upon human values and
cultures." Stating that humanity is a prerequisite
to learn from the environment, the Union Minister
further observed that for building a new India
unethical things have to be checked in our society.
Moreover, saying that the mind is a parachute
that functions when opened, he urged all concerned
to be optimistic while dealing with national
issues.
Meanwhile, conferring degrees and diplomas
to altogether 1,050 students at the convocation
programme, Chancellor of the University and
Assam Governor JB Patnaik said that the enrolment
in the university is growing every year and
currently it has 2,500 students on its rolls.
"The male-female ratio of the students
is 58:42, which is good but it would have been
better, had this ratio been reversed in favour
of the female students, because women empowerment
is the crying need of today's world," he
said.
The convocation was specially marked by conferring
of awards to 16 gold medallists of different
departments and Pyiachy Dutta and Chandana Rang
Gogoi were awarded with the prestigious award
of the university, the 'Trade and Industry Award'
for the batches 2010 and 2011 respectively.
Minakshi Sharma and Pakija Begum were awarded
with the 'Applied Chemistry Education Award'
for the batches 2010 and 2011.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, attending as a
distinguished guest, urged the people particularly
the Tezpur University fraternity, to deal with
every issue as a national problem. "The
solution to economic and social problems will
only be possible by involving responsible institutions
like Tezpur University. Our national problems
like erosion, flood, etc., can be eradicated
through positive involvement of every one concerned,"
he said.
Earlier, VC of TU Prof MK Chowdhury, in his
welcome address said that since the university
has a relatively larger mandate for running
application-oriented courses, the commensurating
infrastructure development is essential to impart
appropriate training.
