GUWAHATI, Feb 9 - Host Assam made a flying
start in the 17th Sub Junior National Netball
Championship, for boys and girls, which got
off to a colourful start at the Sarusajai Sports
Complex here today. The Assam boys team outplayed
Andhra Pradesh 53-7 in the inaugural match.
Earlier, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi formally
declared the meet open at the Indira Gandhi
Stadium. State Minister Prithivi Majhi, former
minister Dr Hemo Probha Saikia, secretary general
of Netball Federation of India Hariom Kaushik,
Director General of Sports Authority of Assam
Pradip Hazarika, Assam Olympic Association joint
secretary Pradip Kumar Hazariak were present
in the inaugural function as guests.
Assam Netball Association (ANA) president Debabrata
Saikia welcomed the gathering and the participating
teams while Kaushik thanked the ANA for hosting
the championship which is gaining popularity
in the country. Chief Minister Gogoi urged all
the participating teams to participate in the
meet in true spirit. He also hoped that teams
from different part of the country will get
an ideal environment to show their talents.
Altogether 19 State teams took part in the march
past in the opening ceremony. The participating
teams are - Andhra Pradesh, Chandigarh, Gujarat,
Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir,
Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Punjab, Rajashthan,
Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Uttaranchal,
Bihar, Assam.
